Philosophy
Human beings are very good at accumulating things, and not so good at letting go. We become attached to our belongings, think that we might use them one day, and feel a twinge of guilt at the thought of letting something go, especially when it has been given to us. As a result, items that we inherit and gifts that we receive may be stowed away in closets or crawl spaces, until we gradually crowd ourselves out of our very own space.
Letting go is a liberating experience, and I have experienced first-hand the magical serendipity that results when we reassess our belongings and release those items that no longer serve us. I firmly believe that less is more.
Our tendency is to simply fill up the space that we have, and every now and again we need to reassess our belongings to ensure that they fit with our current life and still have value. As you go about your daily routine, be on the lookout for items that are buried under a layer of dust, that keep getting in your way, that seem out of place, that are broken or can be donated. Strive to be surrounded by objects that you love and use.
Experience
Alison has been helping people to dig their way out from beneath their stuff for the past six years. For the past 8 1/2 years she has been engaged in the process of de-cluttering her own life, and has rotated through her wardrobe, day timer, volunteer commitments, professional associations, her colon, her finances, her energetic body and her belief system.
As a result, her life continues to expand and evolve in ways that she never imagined. Living a more simplified life on the eastern edge of Vancouver Island, she continues to travel extensively to speak on the joys of living a clutter-free life and to assist clients in transforming their lives, one closet at a time.
